What is a CP42?

The CP42 is a Gas Safe documentation form covering the inspection, testing and certification of commercial catering gas appliances. It is issued only by a Gas Safe registered engineer holding the relevant commercial competencies — typically CCN1, COMCAT 1–5, COCATC and where applicable CIGA1 (commercial gas interlock).

The certificate confirms each gas appliance is safe to use, that any flue arrangements are correct, and that gas pressures and combustion are within manufacturer specification. It is required by:

• Most landlords and lease agreements

What Affects the Price?

1. Number of appliances

Each appliance must be individually tested. A site with one combi oven, a six-burner range and a fryer takes far less engineer time than a site with eight gas appliances and a gas interlock system.

2. Site location

Engineer travel time is a significant cost component. Rural sites or sites distant from a regional engineering hub typically attract higher single-visit pricing — which is one reason multi-site PPM contracts are usually substantially cheaper per site.

3. Gas interlock system

If your kitchen has a gas interlock (which most modern commercial kitchens are required to have under DW172 ventilation guidance) the annual interlock test typically adds £80–£150 to a CP42 visit. Many providers bundle the two together.

4. Out-of-hours requirement

For sites that cannot accommodate inspection during trading hours — hotel breakfast pass, care home meal services, late-night QSR — out-of-hours rates typically add 25–50%.

5. Multi-site contract structure

Multi-site operators almost always benefit from a PPM contract structure. Per-site CP42 cost on a national PPM contract is commonly less than half the standalone rate, and includes scheduling, documentation consolidation and reactive cover.

Where Operators Commonly Overpay

• Paying for separate visits when one would do. CP42, gas interlock test, EICR and PAT can often be coordinated to a single engineer visit — saving travel and labour costs.
• Not consolidating across an estate. Operators with 5+ sites paying standalone rates per location are typically overspending by 30–50% versus a PPM contract.
• Paying for "discovery" remedial work without a quote. Reputable engineers will isolate dangerous appliances, document findings and provide a written remedial quote — they will not perform discretionary work without authorisation.
• Paying premium for "emergency" certification. If you only ever remember the certificate when it expires, you'll pay more. Multi-site PPM scheduling avoids this.
