What is a Commercial Gas Safety Certificate and how often do I need one?

A Commercial Gas Safety Certificate (sometimes called a CP42 or CP17 depending on premises type) is a written record that all the gas appliances on your premises have been inspected by a Gas Safe registered engineer with the relevant commercial competencies and are safe to use. It must be carried out annually and is required by law, your insurer and most landlords.

What's the difference between Gas Safe and NICEIC?

Gas Safe is the official UK register for engineers qualified to work on gas appliances and installations. NICEIC is the leading UK certification body for electrical contractors, providing third-party verification of electrical compliance. HK Engineering holds both, meaning we can deliver gas and electrical compliance for the same site under a single contract.

Do commercial kitchens need a gas interlock system?

Where commercial gas appliances are used, the DW172 ventilation guidance generally requires a gas interlock system that automatically isolates the gas supply if the extract ventilation fails. This is a legal and insurance requirement on most modern commercial kitchens. We install, certify and annually test interlock systems.

How often should EICR fixed-wire testing be carried out?

Commercial premises typically require an EICR every 5 years, or sooner where the installation is older, in poor condition, or where insurers and brand standards specify a shorter cycle. We can phase testing across multiple visits to avoid full site closures.

What happens if a compliance test fails?

We document failures clearly with C1 (immediately dangerous), C2 (potentially dangerous) and C3 (improvement recommended) classifications. C1 issues are made safe where required. The scope and timing of remedial quotations are confirmed after inspection so you can plan around risk and budget.
