How to Choose a Commercial Kitchen Equipment Supplier
Choosing a commercial kitchen equipment supplier is not only a product decision. The supplier also needs to understand the site, coordinate installation and leave the operator with equipment that can be safely used and supported.
This checklist helps restaurants, hotels, quick-service operators and other commercial kitchens compare suppliers on the parts of the project that affect day-to-day operation.
Start with the operating requirement
A useful equipment brief explains what the kitchen must achieve rather than naming a product too early. Record the menu, expected throughput, service peaks, cleaning routine, available space and any planned changes to the operation. For a multi-site programme, note which requirements are standard and which vary by location.
Ask how the equipment will be specified
A credible recommendation should account for capacity, workflow, utility connections, ventilation, access, cleaning and serviceability. Ask the supplier to explain why the proposed equipment fits the brief and which site assumptions the recommendation depends on.
- Does the capacity match peak demand rather than an average day?
- Can staff load, unload and clean the equipment safely?
- Are gas, electrical, water, drainage and ventilation requirements clear?
- Can engineers access service points after installation?
- Are lead times, exclusions and dependencies written into the proposal?
Check who owns installation and commissioning
Clarify whether the same company will coordinate delivery, positioning, connections, testing and handover. If several contractors are involved, the proposal should identify who checks site readiness and who resolves gaps between the equipment specification and the building services.
Compare lifecycle support, not only purchase price
The initial price does not show the full operational cost. Consider cleaning time, energy and water demand, routine servicing, access to parts and the disruption caused by future repairs. Ask what documentation will be provided and how the equipment can move into planned maintenance after handover.
Information to request in a final proposal
- An itemised equipment schedule and clear scope
- Site-service requirements and installation responsibilities
- Delivery, access and positioning assumptions
- Commissioning, user handover and documentation
- Warranty process and route to ongoing service support
